The spirits of a dead couple are haunted by an insufferable family who has moved into their home and hires a malevolent spirit to exorcise them. This is Michael Keaton’s favorite movie. Otho When they spray paint the walls of the house, they change the fire engine’s red elf shoes to white sneakers as he walks through the bathroom, then back to red elf shoes as he enters the next room. Adam: What is your education? Bug Juice: Ah. Well… I went to Juilliard… I graduated from Harvard Business School. I travel quite a lot. I survived the Black Death and had a great time. I’VE SEEN THE EXORCIST ABOUT ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY SEVEN TIMES AND EVERY TIME I SEE IT BECOME FUNNY…NOT THINKING YOU’RE TALKING TO A DEAD NUMBER…WHAT ARE YOU GETTING ABOUT? Do you think I’m qualified? The Geffen Company logo is accompanied by a haunting version of the song “Banana Boat” (sung by the film’s composer, Danny Elfman). During the making of the film, there were several additional/alternate scenes. This version of the film is about 2 minutes shorter than the theatrical release, has a few extra scenes and some others are missing, is in black and white, and has a timecode at the bottom. This version has 4 main differences: Alternate Scene: The scene where Adam tried to leave the house after he and his wife died is different. Instead of a desert, he sees an empty darkness full of rolling gears. Additional Scenes: There is another scene where Lydia is creating photos of Adam and Barbra. After her mother yells at her and accuses her of cutting holes in the sheets, Lydia runs upstairs and tries to convince her father that the photos are real. There’s a lot more to the scene where the adults are looking for ghosts in the attic as we see a desert monster try to eat Adam and Barbra as they hang out of the attic window. Finally, there’s an extra 2 minute scene at the end where we see Lydia riding her bike home from school while her parents talk to Jane on the phone saying they don’t want to sell the house. Lydia’s dance scene is shorter in this version, and there is no scene with Beetlejuice in the waiting room. The film ends with a final exterior shot of the house. Cut to Terror Toons (2002). About ghosts and the dead, you can usually expect a horror movie full of screams and bloody figures. But in Beetlejuice, they experiment with a new aspect of humor. Given that the film was made in 1988. with limited special effects, Beetlejuice can simply be called “creativity at its best.” Tim Burton is a pure visionary. and with this film you have to appreciate his creativity and his ability to translate this film to the screen. The acting is amazing on all fronts. One cannot help but admire the promising young Winona Ryder, a flower ready to bloom. It will take several viewings to fully appreciate the film.
